Chinese Cars Containing Asbestos Recalled in Australia

Two of China's biggest car manufacturers, Great Wall Motor Company and Chery (pron. cherry) Automobile Company, have had to recall 23000 vehicles in Australia. The gaskets and engines of certain models were found to contain asbestos, a cancer causing fiber. These car parts present a threat to mechanics and people making at-home auto repairs, but not to passengers riding inside the vehicles. There is no prohibition of asbestos in China, but the hazardous mineral has been banned in Australia since 2004.
